  • Company Ltd. (Q-Chem) is a Qatari company owned by Qatar Petroleum (QP) and Chevron Phillips Chemical International Qatar Holdings LLC (CPCIQ).

QP owns 51 percent of Q-Chem and CPCIQ owns 49 percent. The Q-Chem facility is a world-class integrated petrochemical plant capable of producing high-density and medium-density polyethylene (HDPE & MDPE), 1-hexene and other products, using state-of-the-art technology provided by Chevron Phillips Chemical, a major integrated producer of chemicals and plastics.

Over US $1 billion was invested to engineer, construct and commission the Q-Chem facility, which began operations in late 2002.

The Q-Chem complex in Mesaieed Industrial City is comprised of an ethylene unit (capable of producing 500,000 metric tons per annum (mtpa)), a polyethylene facility (capable of 453,000 mtpa), and a 1-hexene unit (capable of 47,000 mtpa). Q-Chem assets also include a sulfur recovery and solidification unit, a bagging and storage warehouse, a nitrogen unit, a water treatment plant, seawater cooling system, dock facilities and various administrative buildings.

Qatar Chemical Company II Ltd (Q-Chem II)

Q-Chem II is a joint venture between Qatar Petroleum (51%) and Chevron Phillips Chemical International Qatar Holdings LLC (Chevron Phillips Chemical) (49%). The facility has established a world-class High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) and Normal Alpha Olefins (NAO) plant adjacent to the existing Q-Chem plant in Mesaieed.

The Joint Venture Agreement (JVA) of Q-Chem II was signed on 13 June 2002, along with two independent projects; Ras Laffan Olefins Company and Qatofin. Originally, a JVA was signed with Chevron Phillips Chemical in June 2001 for an ethane cracker and ethylene derivatives plants to be located in Ras Laffan Industrial City. In a later decision by Qatar Petroleum, Atofina and QAPCO were invited as participants in the cracker project. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed with TotalFinaElf affiliate in October 2001. The scope of the project had changed dramatically since. Decisions were later made to place the ethylene derivatives plants (HDPE & NAO plants and LLDPE plant) in Mesaieed where significant investment savings would be realized from synergies with existing petrochemical facilities and infrastructure, which would reduce the investment and operational costs.

The HDPE and NAO plants of Q-Chem II have combined production capacity of 700,000 metric tones per year (mtpa). The plants will utilize Chevron Phillips’ proprietary loop-slurry process for high-density polyethylene, which offers several advantages over competing gas-phase and solution-phase polyethylene processes. The NAO plant produces the full range of alpha olefins including butene, hexene, octene, decene and higher molecular weight olefins.

Ras Laffan Olefins Company Ltd (RLOC)

Ras Laffan Olefins Company Ltd (RLOC) is a Qatari company, 53.31 percent-owned by Q-Chem II and 45.69 percent-owned by Qatofin Company Limited (Q.S.C.) (Qatofin) and Qatar Petroleum 1 percent. RLOC has constructed a world-class 1.3 million mtpa ethylene cracker unit which is operated by Q-Chem II on behalf of RLOC partners. Ethylene produced by RLOC is transported from Ras Laffan to Q-Chem II and Qatofin derivatives units in Mesaieed via a 135km pipeline. In Mesaieed, 700,000 mtpa of ethylene is allocated to Q-Chem II and 600,000 mtpa is transported to Qatofin.
